🌽 ICAR-IIMR Launches Its Own Branded Maize Seeds, Expands Reach Across India

In a landmark move aimed at strengthening seed accessibility and affordability for Indian farmers, the ICAR–Indian Institute of Maize Research (IIMR) has officially launched its own branded hybrid maize seeds

This is the first time in the institute’s history that it has taken direct control of branding and distribution, marking a major milestone in its mission to deliver quality and affordable seeds across the nation.

🚛 First Consignments Dispatched Across States

The initial consignments of IIMR-branded seeds — including LQMH 1, IMH 221 (DMRH 1417), IMH 229 (DMRH 1410), DMRH 1308, and IMH 222 — have already been sent to Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and West Bengal. These seeds are designed to offer farmers improved yield, stress resistance, and cost-effectiveness.

🌱 A Legacy of Innovation in Hybrid Development

Over the past seven years, ICAR-IIMR has developed and released 25 maize hybrids, all notified by the Central Varietal Release Committee (CVRC). An additional 15 hybrids are currently in the pipeline. These hybrids have received widespread recognition for their superior performance, accounting for 26% to 64% of the national breeder seed indents placed by the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation (DAC), Government of India, over the last four years.

💸 Cutting Costs Through Local Production

To tackle the issue of high seed costs, largely due to production concentration in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, ICAR-IIMR partnered with the Department of Agriculture, Government of West Bengal, and West Bengal State Seed Corporation (WBSSC). This collaboration has led to successful maize seed production across key districts such as: NadiaJalpaiguriCooch BeharMurshidabadPaschim MedinipurNorth 24 Parganas As of now, 32,465 quintals of hybrid seeds have been produced, including projections for the Rabi 2024–25 season

🌾 High-Performing Hybrids Gaining Traction

Among the top-performing hybrids are DMRH 1301 and DMRH 1308, released in 2017. Together, they have covered a cumulative 15.98 lakh hectares and have been licensed under 24 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with 18 private seed companies. New hybrids such as LQMH 1, IMH 224, and IQMH 203 are also witnessing rapid adoption, supported by multiple new MoUs for commercial production. In total, 40+ MoUs have been signed with 28 private seed companies, reinforcing the growing demand and confidence in IIMR’s maize breeding program.

🎯 Affordable Seeds, National Impact

By offering IIMR-branded hybrid seeds at less than half the market price, the institute is empowering farmers to access reliable and scientifically-developed varieties. This not only reduces costs for the end-user but also increases productivity and profitability at the grassroots level.

🔍 Looking Ahead: Strengthening India’s Seed Ecosystem

This branding initiative aligns with ICAR-IIMR’s broader goal to: Boost resource generation through seed marketing Enhance national visibility and outreach Support sustainable agricultural growth With a robust R&D foundation, strong industry partnerships, and a farmer-centric mission, ICAR-IIMR is redefining seed innovation and delivery in India’s maize sector.

Key Takeaway

The launch of IIMR-branded maize seeds is a game-changing move in India's agricultural landscape — offering cost-effective, high-quality, and accessible seed solutions to farmers nationwide. It underscores the institute’s commitment to innovation, farmer empowerment, and sustainable seed value chains.
