India Set to Emerge as World’s Largest Rice Producer in 2024-25 Amid Record Foodgrain Output

New Delhi – India is poised to surpass China and become the world’s largest rice producer in the 2024-25 crop year, marking a major milestone in global agriculture. This development comes as the country’s total foodgrain production is projected to reach a record 353.2 million tonnes (MT), reflecting a 6% increase over the previous year, the Ministry of Agriculture announced on Wednesday.

The record output is attributed to a strong monsoon season and favorable climatic conditions, which led to higher yields across major crop categories, including rice, wheat, pulses, and oilseeds

Rice Production Surges
India’s rice output is projected to overtake that of China for the first time, cementing the country’s role as a global agricultural powerhouse. Officials said the increase was driven by enhanced sowing techniques, expanded cultivation areas, government support, and timely rainfall. “India’s position as the largest rice producer not only boosts domestic food security but also enhances its role in global food supply chains,” a senior agriculture ministry official stated.

Breakdown of Key Crop Growth (2024-25):

  • Rice: Sharp increase set to make India the global leader in production
  • Wheat: Higher acreage and improved yields contributed to increased output
  • Pulses & Oilseeds: Benefited from targeted government schemes and favorable weather

 Implications for Global Markets

As the world’s leading rice exporter, India’s rise in production could have far-reaching impacts on global rice prices and supply dynamics, especially for importing countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. However, analysts caution that export policies and domestic buffer stock management will be key to sustaining growth and balancing market needs.

Government Initiatives Pay Off

The record output also reflects the success of various agricultural reforms and support schemes, including:

  • PM-KISAN, providing direct income support to farmers
  • Investment in irrigation, seed quality, and digital agriculture tools
  • Enhanced access to crop insurance and fertilizer subsidies

India’s agricultural sector continues to show resilience and momentum, bolstered by a combination of favorable weather, policy support, and farmer adaptation. The 2024-25 crop year is expected to not only break production records but also redefine India’s role in ensuring global food security
