Pakistan Secures $155 Per Ton Cut in Rice Export Valuation to Kenya, Boosting Trade Prospects

Islamabad: Pakistan has achieved a significant breakthrough in its rice export sector by securing a reduction in the customs valuation of its rice exports to Kenya. The valuation has been lowered from $615 to $460 per metric ton, a development expected to enhance the competitiveness of Pakistani rice in the Kenyan market and strengthen bilateral trade relations between the two countries.

Diplomatic Efforts Yield Results

The reduction in customs valuation follows sustained efforts by Pakistani rice exporters, who had voiced concerns over the high valuation, making it difficult to compete in the Kenyan market. The Trade Mission at the Pakistan High Commission in Nairobi took up the issue and engaged in intensive diplomatic lobbying and negotiations with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to address the challenge.

Following extensive high-level meetings, official correspondence, and direct discussions with Kenyan government representatives, the Trade Mission successfully secured the revision, which is now expected to provide much-needed relief to Pakistan’s rice exporters. The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) has acknowledged the mission’s proactive role in resolving the issue and boosting export prospects.

Positive Impact on Pakistani Rice Exports

The $155 per ton reduction in customs valuation is set to improve Pakistan’s competitive edge in the Kenyan market, potentially increasing its share in the East African region. Lowering the valuation will make Pakistani rice more affordable for Kenyan buyers, which could significantly increase the volume of rice exports.

As a key global rice supplier, Pakistan is expected to capitalize on this opportunity to strengthen its footprint in Kenya and other regional markets. The development is also seen as a strategic move to reinforce Pakistan’s position as a preferred supplier in the region.

Government’s Commitment to Supporting Exporters

Officials have emphasized that this achievement highlights Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to supporting its exporters and ensuring that trade barriers are addressed through proactive diplomatic channels. The success in Kenya reflects a broader effort by the Pakistani government to promote its products globally, improve access to international markets, and foster economic cooperation with key trading partners.

With this development, Pakistani rice exporters can now look forward to increased demand and higher sales in Kenya. The government is optimistic that this success will pave the way for similar trade facilitation initiatives in other international markets, further boosting Pakistan’s export sector.
