WISMA urges govt to extend September 2025 sugar release quota as heavy rainfall disrupts supply

Amid excessive rainfall in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat, the sugar industry has urged the government to extend the September 2025 sugar release quota .I n a letter to the Joint Secretary (Sugar), Department of Food and Public Distribution, the West Indian Sugar Mills Association stated that due to excessive, heavy and incessant rains in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat, sugar lifting by merchants and movement of sugar transportation had been badly hit.

March NY world sugar #11 (SBH26) on Friday closed down -0.09 (-0.63%), and December London ICE white sugar #5 (SWZ25) closed down -3.30 (-0.80%). Sugar prices moved lower on Friday, with London sugar posting a 4.75-year nearest-futures low. The outlook for robust global sugar supplies is pressuring prices. On Thursday, NY sugar prices slumped to a 5-year nearest-futures low mainly due to higher sugar output in Brazil and talk of a global sugar surplus. On Wednesday, sugar trader Czarnikow boosted its global 2025/26 sugar surplus estimate to 8.7 MMT, up +1.2 MMT from a September estimate of 7.5 MMT.
