Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday called for a transformation of India’s agriculture sector from a source of mere employment to a driver of prosperity, while addressing a gathering in Panchkula. Speaking at the event, Shah emphasized that agriculture must move beyond subsistence-level income and become a profitable, technology-driven sector.
He highlighted the need for value addition, agri-based industries, and improved market access to ensure higher earnings for farmers. Shah said government initiatives focusing on irrigation, crop diversification, food processing, and digital platforms are aimed at strengthening farmers’ incomes and creating sustainable rural livelihoods. He also stressed the importance of cooperatives, startups, and private sector participation in unlocking the sector’s full potential.
Referring to ongoing reforms, the Home Minister noted that empowering farmers through infrastructure development, better storage facilities, and transparent pricing mechanisms would help convert agricultural labor into long-term economic growth.
The event in Panchkula saw participation from farmers, policymakers, and agricultural experts, who discussed strategies to modernize farming practices and enhance rural prosperity.
