
Jalandhar, Nov 21, 2025 — Sugarcane farmers in the Jalandhar region have postponed a planned highway and railway blockade by four days, following assurances from state authorities. The farmers, led by the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Doaba) and the Doaba Kisan Sangharsh Committee, had threatened to block the Jalandhar-Phagwara national highway and rail tracks near Dhanowali if their demands were not met.
A hike in the State Advised Price (SAP) of sugarcane. Immediate release of pending payments owed to farmers by sugar mills. A formal announcement of the cane crushing season by the mills.
Farmer leaders Manjit S Rai (BKU Doaba) and Balwinder S Malli Nangal met top government officials in Chandigarh, including the Secretary of Agriculture, Arshdeep S Thind, and Punjab Cane Commissioner, Amrik Singh. According to Rai, the officials requested time until November 24 to finalize decisions on the SAP and the crushing season. Nangal added that the government has assured the farmers that all pending dues will be cleared as soon as possible.
Once a conclusive decision is communicated to them after the meeting scheduled on Monday, the farmer unions will decide their next course of action.
