India has exported 198.65 lakh tonnes of rice by March 25 in the last fiscal year, surpassing the 163.58 lakh tonnes shipped during the entire 2023-24 financial year. Among this, 7.95 lakh tonnes of broken rice were exported, which is also being used as a feedstock for ethanol production

In response to a query in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs, Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya, stated that the government closely monitors the domestic production, availability, and trade of agricultural commodities. She emphasized that the government takes policy interventions whenever required to balance domestic food security while protecting the interests of consumers, farmers, and the industry

Breakdown of India’s Rice Exports (FY25 as of March 25)

  • Basmati rice – 59.44 lakh tonnes
  • Parboiled rice – 90.44 lakh tonnes
  • Non-basmati white rice – 33.23 lakh tonnes
  • Broken rice – 7.95 lakh tonnes
  • Other rice varieties – 7.59 lakh tonnes

 Comparison with 2023-24 Exports

In the 2023-24 fiscal year, India exported a total of 163.58 lakh tonnes of rice, comprising:

  • Basmati rice – 5.49 lakh tonnes
  • Parboiled rice – 75.7 lakh tonnes
  • Non-basmati white rice – 23.6 lakh tonnes
  • Broken rice – 5.49 lakh tonnes
  • Other rice varieties – 6.36 lakh tonnes

Usage of Broken Rice in India

The Minister further highlighted that India produces approximately 50-60 lakh tonnes of broken rice annually. This variety of rice is primarily used for poultry feed, animal feed, and ethanol production by grain-based distilleries. The ethanol produced from broken rice is then supplied to Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) for petrol blending, contributing to the government’s efforts toward energy security and biofuel promotion

Government’s Monitoring & Policy Actions

The Indian government continues to monitor the availability and movement of rice in domestic and international markets, ensuring that exports align with domestic needs. It undertakes policy interventions whenever required to ensure price stability, safeguard food security, and support farmers and industries reliant on rice-based products

With the continuous rise in rice exports, the sector remains a crucial component of India’s agriculture and trade policies, playing a key role in global food security and sustainable energy solutions.
