Indonesia's rice reserves are projected to exceed 4 million tonnes by the end of May 2025, achieving the highest level since the establishment of the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) in 1969. As of May 13, the reserves had already reached 3.7 million tonnes, reflecting a significant milestone in the nation's efforts to bolster food security.
This achievement is attributed to coordinated efforts among farmers, central and local governments, and Bulog's proactive role in absorbing farmers' harvests across the country. The government has implemented measures such as increased fertiliser subsidies, distribution of agricultural machinery, acceleration of planting schedules, and the introduction of digital tools for farming.
According to the USDA Rice Outlook April 2025 report, Indonesia's rice production for the 2024–2025 planting season is projected to reach 34.6 million tonnes, an increase of 600 thousand tonnes from the previous projection and up 4.8% compared to the previous year.
This positions Indonesia as the leading rice producer in Southeast Asia, surpassing major producers such as Thailand and Vietnam . The surplus in rice production has prompted the Indonesian government to consider utilizing the excess for humanitarian missions, including aid to countries like Palestine and regions in Africa.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono stated that the government is formulating a scheme to assist international humanitarian missions with its rice surplus.
This development signifies a shift from Indonesia's previous reliance on rice imports. In 2024, the country imported over 3.7 million tonnes of rice. However, with the current surplus, Indonesia is moving towards self-sufficiency and even considering the expansion of farmland by 3 million hectares within the next five years to sustain and enhance its rice production capabilities.
The record-high rice reserves and increased production underscore Indonesia's commitment to achieving food security and its potential role in contributing to global food aid initiatives.
