India - EU Trade Records 22.5 Billion Euro Surplus

New Delhi: India’s trade relationship with the European Union witnessed strong momentum in 2024, with the country recording a trade surplus of €22.5 billion, underscoring its growing strength in global commerce. According to EU trade statistics, India’s exports to EU nations reached €71.3 billion, while imports stood at €48.8 billion during the year. The surplus reflects robust demand for Indian goods across major European markets.

The Netherlands and Germany emerged as India’s leading export destinations within the EU, followed by France, Italy, and Belgium. Key export sectors included engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, textiles, and IT-enabled services. On the import front, Germany remained the EU’s largest exporter to India, with strong inflows of machinery, automobiles, chemicals, and high-end industrial equipment. France and Italy also accounted for significant shares of EU exports to India.

Trade experts note that the widening surplus enhances India’s economic leverage as India and the EU continue negotiations on a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The agreement is expected to further boost bilateral trade, investment flows, and supply-chain integration. The latest figures reaffirm India’s position as a reliable trading partner for the European Union and signal positive prospects for deeper economic cooperation in the coming years.
