Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene urgently as farmers across the state grapple with a sharp decline in maize and green gram prices. The unexpected price fall has raised concerns among agricultural communities, especially in regions where these crops form a major part of farmers’ livelihoods. According to state officials, the market prices for both maize and green gram (moong) have dipped below the Minimum Support Price (MSP), leaving farmers distressed as they struggle to recover even basic production costs. Many growers have reportedly approached local authorities seeking immediate support measures.CM Siddaramaiah, in his communication to the Prime Minister, urged the central government to take concrete steps—such as strengthening procurement operations, revising MSP mechanisms, and expanding market intervention schemes—to ensure farmers get a fair return for their produce.
He emphasized that Karnataka’s agricultural sector has already been battling challenges like irregular monsoon patterns, rising input costs, and fluctuating market demand, and that the recent price fall could push farmers further into financial hardship.
The Chief Minister reiterated the state’s commitment to supporting farmers but stressed that central assistance is essential to stabilize prices and protect rural livelihoods. He called for swift action to prevent further losses during the ongoing harvest season.Farmers’ groups and opposition parties have also echoed the demand, urging both state and central governments to act quickly to restore confidence among growers.
