www.asiaagrifood.com - 🇺🇸📊 Trump’s 25% Tariff Threat on Iran Trade Puts India–Iran Rice & Commodity Exports in Spotlight

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping 25 % tariff on all trade with countries doing business with Iran, a move aimed at increasing economic pressure amid ongoing unrest in Tehran. The announcement, made via social media, said the tariff would apply to all nations trading with Iran, although formal documentation and legal backing have yet to be released.

India has long counted Iran as one of its major markets for Basmati rice and other agricultural exports. Recent reports highlight that India exported nearly 5.99 lakh tonnes of Basmati rice worth about $468 million to Iran during April–November 2025–26. However, the tariff threat comes at a time when trade channels are already strained by internal instability in Iran, disrupting payment flows and buyer confidence. Industry bodies like the Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF) warn that the tariff risk could further complicate transactions and risk mitigation, slowing shipments and affecting farmers and exporters dependent on this trade lane.

India’s exports to Iran traditionally include not just rice — such as Basmati — but also tea, sugar, spices, pharmaceuticals, and other goods. With the Trump administration’s new tariff regime, there is growing uncertainty over how Indian exporters will navigate trade with Iran while also managing relations with the U.S. market.

The tariff announcement has already caught the attention of market watchers. The shares of major Indian Basmati rice exporters came into focus as investors weighed the potential impact of disrupted exports to Iran.
