India Maintains Strong Sugar Production with 24.8 Million Tonnes in 2024-25

Indian sugar mills have produced 24.8 million metric tonnes (MT) of sugar so far in the 2024-25 season, according to a statement by the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) released on Monday. The sugar season in India typically runs from October to September, and this year’s production reflects steady progress in output despite fluctuations in weather and market conditions.

Steady Growth in Sugar Production

The 2024-25 season’s production indicates a consistent trend in sugar output, driven by favorable climatic conditions in key sugarcane-producing states such as Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka. India, the world's largest producer of sugar, continues to maintain its strong foothold in the global market with robust domestic demand and increasing exports.

Impact of Ethanol Blending Program

The government’s push for ethanol blending with petrol has influenced sugar production dynamics, with a portion of sugarcane being diverted towards ethanol production. This move aims to reduce India’s dependence on fossil fuels while supporting the sugar industry by balancing supply and demand.

Regional Performance and Contribution

  • Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh continue to lead in production, contributing significantly to the overall output.
  • Karnataka has also shown steady production, further bolstering the country’s sugar supply.

Export Outlook and Global Market Trends

India’s sugar exports are expected to remain strong, with favorable global market conditions and rising demand for Indian sugar. However, export volumes could be moderated to ensure sufficient availability of sugar for domestic consumption and ethanol production.

Government Monitoring and Policy Measures

The government is closely monitoring the sugar industry to ensure stability in domestic prices and smooth implementation of the ethanol blending program. Initiatives to modernize sugar mills and enhance production efficiency are also underway to maintain India’s leadership in the global sugar industry.

As the 2024-25 season progresses, industry experts remain optimistic about maintaining consistent sugar production levels while meeting domestic and international demands.
