Sugar Ethanol Bioenergy Int- India is witnessing significant progress in the ethanol sector, marked by consistent year-on-year growth in production, blending levels, and overall capacity. This momentum is not only transforming the country’s energy landscape but also playing a vital role in economic development and fostering sustainable growth in rural regions. During the current Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2024–25, ethanol blending in petrol reached 19.8% in August 2025.

The cumulative average blending rate from November 2024 to August 2025 stood at 19.1%, according to the Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell (PPAC) data.In August 2025 alone, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) received 97.8 crore liters of ethanol under the EBP Programme. This brought the cumulative ethanol offtake by OMCs to 820.5 crore liters over the November–August period.Official data indicates that a total of 88.5 crore liters of ethanol was blended into petrol in August 2025, pushing the cumulative ethanol blending volume to 837.5 crore liters from November 2024 to August 2025.According to the sources, so far in ESY 2024–25, ethanol supply from grains stands at 526.01 crore litres, while supply from sugar-based feedstocks stands at 294.51 crore litres.

India has successfully achieved 20% ethanol blending in petrol in 2025, five years ahead of its target, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Puri recently announced. This remarkable growth has helped reduce the country’s dependence on imported crude oil, leading to a significant saving in foreign exchange. In a relief for ethanol producers, the Indian government has permitted sugar mills and distilleries to produce ethanol from sugarcane juice, sugar syrup, B-heavy molasses (BHM), and C-heavy molasses (CHM) during the Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2025-26 without any restrictions.
