A sugar-producing company has entered into a tripartite agreement with GAIL (India) Limited and Mahanagar Gas Limited (MNGL) for the supply of biogas, marking a significant step toward sustainable energy adoption. Under the agreement, the sugar company will produce compressed biogas (CBG) from agricultural waste and by-products generated during sugar manufacturing. GAIL and MNGL will facilitate the offtake, transportation, and distribution of the biogas for use in city gas distribution networks.

The collaboration aims to promote renewable energy, reduce carbon emissions, and support the government’s push toward a circular economy. By utilizing waste material to generate clean fuel, the project is expected to enhance energy efficiency while providing an additional revenue stream for the sugar producer.

Officials from the companies stated that the partnership aligns with India’s broader clean energy goals and will help reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The initiative is also expected to benefit farmers by creating value from agricultural residue and supporting rural economic development. The biogas supply is likely to commence once the necessary infrastructure and regulatory approvals are in place.
