Maharashtra’s sugar industry has recorded strong performance this crushing season, with total sugar production reaching 562.97 lakh quintals, reinforcing the state’s position as one of India’s leading sugar producers. According to industry data, improved cane availability, efficient mill operations, and favorable weather conditions contributed to the higher output. Sugar mills across major producing regions operated at optimal capacity, ensuring steady crushing throughout the season. Kolhapur district emerged as the top performer in terms of sugar recovery rate, reflecting superior cane quality and efficient processing practices. Officials attributed the achievement to better agronomic practices adopted by farmers, timely harvesting, and the use of improved sugarcane varieties with higher sucrose content.
Other key sugar-producing districts also posted stable production figures, though recovery rates varied depending on rainfall patterns, soil conditions, and mill efficiency. Industry experts noted that sustained focus on cane development programmers and modernization of mills has played a critical role in improving overall productivity.
The state government and sugar sector stakeholders continue to emphasize the importance of sustainable sugarcane cultivation, water-use efficiency, and diversification into ethanol production to ensure long-term viability of the industry. With robust production figures and improved recovery rates in key districts like Kolhapur, Maharashtra’s sugar sector remains a significant contributor to the rural economy and the national sugar supply.
