Global sugar prices climbed this week as markets reacted to signals that India—one of the world’s major sugar exporters—may reduce its export volumes for the upcoming season.

In a significant boost to the state’s agro-industrial sector, the Bihar government has announced plans to establish 25 new sugar mills across various districts.

The sugar production season in Maharashtra is gaining momentum as 165 sugar mills across the state have officially begun crushing operations. With the season progressing steadily, the state has already recorded a sugar output of 151.48 lakh quintals, indicating a strong start for the industry.

The sharp rise has been attributed to improved cane yield, favorable weather conditions, and increased crushing activity across major sugar-producing states.

India has contracted more than 100,000 tonnes of sugar for export, with traders indicating that additional deals are likely in the coming weeks.

The Gohana Sugar Mill in Haryana has officially begun its sugarcane crushing operations for the new season, bringing relief and optimism to thousands of sugarcane farmers in the region. The commencement marks an important phase in the agricultural cycle, as farmers look forward to timely processing and smoother payments for their produce.

India has finalized a significant export agreement involving over 1 lakh tonnes of sugar, marking a major boost for the country’s trade sector. The deal is expected to strengthen India’s position in the global sugar market while providing a positive push to the domestic economy.

The Commissioner noted that the Planning & Development Board has officially approved the “Digital Monitoring Scheme for the Sugar Sector” under the Annual Development Programmed (ADP), marking a major step toward real-time supervision of sugar mills in the province.

The strategy includes enhancing production capacity, modernizing technology, improving management practices, and exploring alternative revenue streams such as energy and ethanol production.

The government is working on a roadmap to modernize the mills with improved technology and efficient management under the cooperative framework.

The shift in leadership highlights a changing dynamic in India’s sugar sector, with Uttar Pradesh playing an increasingly important role in ensuring domestic supply stability.
