Uttar Pradesh has emerged as India’s leading sugar-producing state in the current crushing season, overtaking Maharashtra on the back of higher cane availability, improved recovery rates, and efficient mill operations. According to industry data, sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh have reported stronger performance this season, supported by favorable weather conditions and timely harvesting. The state has recorded a steady rise in sugar output, allowing it to move ahead of Maharashtra, which has traditionally dominated India’s sugar production.
Experts attribute Uttar Pradesh’s success to better farm practices, improved varieties of sugarcane, and consistent government support for farmers and sugar mills. Higher recovery rates and uninterrupted crushing operations have further strengthened the state’s position.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s production has been impacted by regional factors, including variations in rainfall and cane supply constraints in some districts, resulting in comparatively lower output this season. The shift in leadership highlights a changing dynamic in India’s sugar sector, with Uttar Pradesh playing an increasingly important role in ensuring domestic supply stability.
Industry stakeholders believe this trend could influence future policy decisions related to pricing, ethanol blending, and exports. With the crushing season still underway, all eyes remain on final production numbers, which will determine India’s overall sugar availability and market outlook for the year.
